Abilify takes weeks to take effect, so you may not see true results for up to 6 weeks. Your wife is right to keep an eye on you and you should trust the people around you if they are saying you appear a bit manic because they have a front row seat to your behavior. Sometimes it is hard for us to realize we are going through an up because we're in the thick of it. Several times I have started a drug and thought after a couple of days that I'm feeling better, but the mind is a funny thing and sometimes if we want something bad enough our brains will make it happen...for a little while. Watch out for the side effects and especially feeling too good because for me and a lot of others this drug induced manic phases. Good luck and keep coming back!! |

Thank you both for responding. mmmental I just wanted to say your right. I was defiantly in a manic swing because of the diagnosis. I have tapered off to a rather normal baseline but at the same time I am seeing how strange it is to "feel normal". I have been much more productive in my life by not regressing from tasks but taking them on with full force. The NP told me that the Abilify was much quicker in effecting the body then other types of medications such as depression meds that I was on previously. It is strange that I took on other things and started to push away my mood tracking for a few weeks. But I know see how important it is and it also helped that my physicians have logged in as well. I am glad I found this site and hope that it will help me to understand and accept my diagnosis as well as understand it more and more. Thank You again.... mom4yehoshua... you are absolutely correct. they are a blessing. I am still doing better. I have had a few incidents were int he past I would have completely wanted to hide(sleep) away the time. But I just brushed it off and got it taken care of. I didn't feel scared or reluctant to do so. And during that time I noticed it myself which was an eye opener for one of the first times in my life. |

Well it happened. I had a major swing and I hate to say it but I have done some research deeper into Abilify and found out I am not the only one that has had this side effect. In a nutshell I had a one day of "compulsive gambling" and believe it or not it was on scratch off tickets. I have NEVER done anything like that before except for when I was in Las Vegas on one of my many trips there for work. And basically that is how we figured out I had Bi-polar disorder. I am just curious if there are others out there that get this feeling. In my mind I new it was wrong but I just could NOT stop. Please respond and let me know if what I have read on other places is not just a mere coincidence but a true possible side effect. I have already contacted my NP and told her I want to switch medications. Any sugestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Current medications as of 03-29-2010

Abilify was given to me the 3rd time i was hospitalized by a hospital psychiatrist Before that I was on Seraquilm. I can feel Abilify's up-iness thought that has tapered off a bit. I take it in the morning just in case. Before that I was on Seroquel and it had a negative effect on me - uncluding whoa - alot of weight gain. Totally bums me out. "sgertsmans"...I also feel like my life just changed with day one of Abiliby! It has been almost 2 weeks now and I don't know when I last had 2 straight weeks of feeling normal, human, decent. I have just started experiencing some hand and feet swelling (water retention I guss). I hope this will go away. Anyone else have this and it went away. My feet are so puffy lol, but I just can't imagine not taking this med now. |

sgertsman, I had a similar effect from abilify! it made me feel great and so energised instantly, and I didn't need to sleep! but I started waking up earlier and earlier and getting more and more agitated. |

I was on Abilify when I was a teenager. I really loved it, and it worked the wonders on me. I ain't on it now, but wish to be back on. My mum blamed it for messing me up. ![]() Medications for July 2010
