way too much sleep

Hi. It is not unusual for me to get between 10 - 14 hours of sleep a night - almost every night. I have bipolar affective disorder. Is this typical of people with bipolar or other mental illnesses? Is it a side effect? Can it have a negative impact on my illness? Thanks for your feedback.

hi
iv found that with my bipolar i am always tired and constantly sleeping way more than normal. so dont think its just you it is a symptom of having bipolar the meds and the dissorder its self contribute to always being tired. My doctors tell me that having a regular waking up time each day including weekends helps bipolar patients and the more time you spend sleeping the worse it is for you to feel better. hope this helps :)

Thank your for the reply. Your doctors are right of course but the discipline part about getting out of bed when I am not scheduled to go to group that day is the hard part! I'm working on that one. I actually did it yesterday but that was only because I mistook the time my group started at (afternoon) and got up too early. Mind you it proved to me I can do it when I try so that was good.

My little one is the only reason I get up ROFL. I really have such a hard time sometimes though, still. Because I want to be a good mommy, I get up at a set time no matter what, at the latest. I can't get to sleep though. I am usually not very tired at night...which is so counter to what I feel like in the morning LOL. Oh well.

(((HUGS))) Hope you can get that sleep the way you like it. I know I will never give up my night times, it is my me time. :D

Does your sleep vary though with your mood? When I'm depressed I can sleep for long hours, 9-11 at night, still feel tired and doze throughout the day. When I'm elevated I sleep with 3-5 hours, sometimes I feel tired, mostly overtired.

My usual sleep, when I'm baseline is about 8.5. When that is consistant, I know I'm Ok. I don't feel tired and sluggish and its not a struggle to get out of bed. Of course, occasionally, even people with BP can feel like lying in for no apparent reason! Everyone does it! So perhaps you need to explore how you're feeling. To make sure its not a symptom. Otherwise, plan your day the day before, any walks, meetings with friends, shopping, etc. It might help you better if you have a purpose. Good luck!

I too sleep long hours, about 12 hours approx, I foind it hard to wake up in the morning and would just sleep through an alarm if I set it. I would love to have a regular sleeping pattern. My tabs made me tired the first few days like really tired but Im mostly tired as it is. I would like some sorta med to wake me up in the morning.

I too, on a normal night, will sleep 10-12 hours. When I'm stressed or depressed, the pattern may be disturbed, but I still seem to need at least 10 hours. Even after I started taking my BP meds...

Sometimes if I only get 8 or 9 hours I'm still fine, but when I'm depressed/upset/stressed/triggered that's just way too little for me.

I have slept as much as 20 hours a night, so if 10 or 12 is what you need to function, then at least you have 14 or 12 hours that you are awake and can get things done. Don't worry if you sleep more than other people. If you still can't accomplish anything, then you probably need a better treatment plan.

I suffered sleeping problems but with the right attitude, self discipline, meds that my doctor gave me, I manage to have my regular sleeping.
