I need to change councilors. I've been with mine for almost two years but we were working on an unrelated problem that's now resolved. Now that my BP is the main focus I find that she doesn't really know much about it. Every time I ask a question she just reaches for a book. I've also lost trust in her for other reasons I won't go into.
My questions is this... Should I try to find someone that specializes in bipolar disorder?
Is that what you all did or did I just end up with one of the few that don't know much about it?

Even a small child can carry a ton of bricks.
All they have to do is do it one at a time.

So no one is going to reply?
Maybe I didn't word the question right.
My PDOC was more specialized in something else that she helped me with.
Now that that problem is resolved I was wondering if I should look for someone that specializes in BP or not since I am leaving my PDOC.
Is that what you all did or do you use non specialists to help treat your BP?

I think I'm going to stick with the two PDOCs I have for now. The one I'm having problems with isn't my RX person. She's more of a coach to help me through the hard times. She's the one I'm having problems with but I'm going to try talking things over with her and seeing if I can feel like we can work together still. (She really hurt my feelings bad while I was severely depressed and I lost trust in her.) If not I'll at least still have my RX doc who will help out until I get another coach type.

My diagnosis is now BPI. I was II for a long time but thanks to one three day MANIC! stage I'm BPI now.

I don't know why the change in diagnosis hit me so hard but I sat and cried for a long time and I wasn't even depressed when I heard. BPI is so much scarier than BPII.

When I was trying to tell my husband how different the feeling was now I told him that being BPII is like a MD telling you that cancer is inoperable. BPI feels more like he said it's fatal. I know that there are meds and support out there for me and I'm thankful for that but I feel more on my own now than before even though I can't explain why.

Mooky: any change of dx. can feel like your world has been hit by a tornado. I felt like that when they told me I had Bipolar II instead of Unipolar Depression. I think you need to give yourself time to adjust to the change, just as you would have to with any major change in your life.

I am glad you like your RX pdoc, there is no getting around how important the meds are. I have a medical background--I was a RN before I got too sick to work so I was always very compliant with taking exactly what my pdoc said to take. Now, with my diagnosis change, we have to change meds and it has to be done so slowly(I'm going on Lamictal and was weaned off of Cymbalta) so now its like I have no meds at all because I only have two short acting therpeutic ones that are actually at working levels in my bloodstream--the others we are still titrating up on. I honestly had not thought this time period would be as bad as it is.
Anyway, Bipolar I sounds more scarey, but it might actually be easier to get help with because it has been around so long that there has been time for the pdocs to mostly agree on what to do. They are still fighting (excuse me, I mean having scholarly disagreements) about what meds are best for all the other Bipolar numbers.
I think maybe you feel more alone because Bipolar One feels like you are less in control, it makes you feel like you don't know yourself. Thats how Bipolar Two, as a new diagnosis for me, makes me feel. I knew what to expect with the Depression (even if it wasn't very good relief of symptoms because of the wrong diagnosis) but this Bipolar Two is all new. And now I have to take meds that I am only used to thinking of as anti-seizure meds. Anytime you have to reframe thinking about yourself it is scarey.

The thing that has helped me the most is to try to remember I have the disease of Bipolar two, I am not the disease of Bipolar Two. In fact, if it has me feeling too lousy I have been known to stand up in my living room and speak out loud, telling the illness to shut up if its telling me I am useless or hopeless. I only do the out loud part if I'm alone.

It is like anyother chemical imbalance illness (I like to compare it to diabetes) and with meds and other help, it can be controlled. Sure, I have to work at it but it will not define me or my life.

I hope some of this is helpful for you and that I didn't write too much. I have a bad tendency to ramble. I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry Cristty. I'm in Oregon and have no idea of any PDOCs there but you might try calling the crisis hot line. The number should be in your phone book. Not only can they help when you are hitting a really rough spot but they can usually help a person get in touch with a PDOC that has an opening. Another option is to call your insurance and ask for a list of councilors that are covered by your insurance in your area. If not call around to the hospitals and ask which have a mental ward. The staff there will know the local PDOCs since they treat many clients from different areas. They should also be pretty good at recommended someone that works well with BP since they treat BP clients a lot.

I wish you the best of luck.

I briefly had a pdoc that was accesible by cell phone 24/7 but my insurance would only pay about 1/3rd his extremely high fee. It turned out he didn't know anymore than the other pdocs I can see for just $5. My symptoms are not severe enough to need emergency access.

I briefly had a pdoc that was accesible by cell phone 24/7 but my insurance would only pay about 1/3rd his extremely high fee. It turned out he didn't know anymore than the other pdocs I can see for just $5. My symptoms are not severe enough to need emergency access.

I deal with 2 PDOCs. One prescribes for me and the other coaches me through rough spots and helps me plan out a good course to follow so I can be the kind of person I want to be. My RX PDOC I e-mail every week or so or if I'm having a problem. I also have an emergency number for her. She also tracks this sight and will call me if she sees things going bad for me so we can set up an appointment. The other I see every 2 weeks.

Mooky - that is cool that your dr tracks this site. Also, when the dr at the hospital finally labeled me BP 1 (mixed) - I did cry too. But then I felt some relief because Ihad a name for the crazy shit Ive done and felt. This was probably about 8 years ago that I was dx. I think of it like I was always BP1, I just didnt know it yet and because I didnt know I got the wrong treatment that sometimes made things worse. So you were probably BP1 all along and just finally know it now, which is a good thingbecause then youll get the right treatment. It is easier said than done - because I still, to this day, get upset with having BP1, think it is 100% unfair.... and it is. It isnt "fair" that nay of us have these problems. But at least I finally have an accurate dx after15 years with the wrong dx.

Lizabeth- I know BP1 seems more concrete, but it isnt really. I seem to give my dr such a hard time because my moods are allover the place. I went on this site to try to track my moods specifically so I coudl show her after a while how I really am doing since Ihave such a hard time explaining to her how I feel when I see her.

kef - I like to think NOW that I don't need emergency help but I have needed it so many different times in the past I am worried to have a dr with no emergency acess or no hospital privileges. My dr now doesnt so I am hav'ing to look for a new dr. I just cant trust that i will always be stable enough i guess.
