Cristy,

It is not uncommon for people with alcohol dependence (alcoholism) to also have a mental health diagnosis. As a matter of fact, 60% of us are. I, myself, am dually diagnosed.

Is your fiance' in recovery? If so, a medication that makes him "high" is not a good choice for a sleep medication. Any medication that gives recovering addicts/alcoholics a "buzz" is a bad choice because it may be a trigger. Remeron is a well-known anti-depressant medication that can also be used for sleep. The fact that it makes him "drowsy" is perfectly okay.... he's supposed to be using it for sleep.

The key here is recovery. Is your finance sober? How long has he been sober? What kind of support system does he have? How aware is his Pdoc of his addiction?

Be well,
Jules

Thanks Jules! He goes to a program here called Kolmac and he also goes to AA meetings almost every day, he has been sober for 2 months then he relapse, now he has been sober for one month, his doctor knows about his adciton problem. In one of his manic episodes he drank pure rubbing alcahol and also listerine and he was in the hospital for 3 days. And then they sent him to the psyc ward for another 5 days, he didnt try to kill hilsefl he just wanted to buzz. I think my relashionship with him is making me more bipolar than ever cause it has been realy hard on me and my depression worst a lot. Since then I spoke to his doctor and told him I think he had bilolar traces and and I describe some of his behavior on the lexapro (was the only drug at the time) and the remeron, and he decided to win him off lexapro and add lamecatal which is tkes forever to ger on his system and he has been really agressiv towards me because he doesnt think he is bipolar, but I have been reading a lot and he shows a lot of symtoms. But I think remeron makes him weird, he has conversations with me that he doesnt remember on it, and I heard that antidrpressents can really make you more unstable than ever, and I dont think he is on a higher dose of lamectal to make him stable yet to balance the remeron, so I just think he should try other alternatives since the lamecatal takes forever and its both of us strugling with this stability issue at the same time. but I cannot go there and demand his pdoc to switch his meds but I wish he would use the seroquel instead of the remeron cause his doctor was thinking about trazedon which is another anti depressent and i think more and more that this pdoc is not so good with bipolar disorder. I'm just scared cause I read a lot and these combinations seems a bit odd to me specially cause I have not seem any improvement on his behavior. Thanks for all your help. Your answers really mean a lot me.
Have a good night
