Currently I am on a trial study using Lamictal and it has worked wonders for me. I am taking 150 mg of Lam and 1500 of Depakote with an occasional Xanax when needed. I am actually able to function.

I have a problem with PMDD and the increase of Depakote has help so much.

If anyone else is on Lamictal, I would like to talk to you to see if it is working for you.

My wife has taken both Depakote and Lamictal. She had better results with Lamictal, but the Depakote caused a lot of weight gain. I noticed that you mentioned PMDD. The reason I bring that up is because my wife also experiences PMDD. She takes an herb called Vitex and has had good results with it. In Europe (Germany I think) it is more generally accepted to take this herb than here in the states, but my wife has consulted with her P Doc about this and he has given the green light on it to take. You may want to ask your doc about it too.

Hi

I was recently rediagnosed as Bipolar II and a new consultant changed me from very high doses of Epilim (sodium valproate), moclobemide (a MAOI) and quetiapine with propranolol for tremors. I'd been "stable" on this mix but was anchored in moderate to severe depression with constant suicide ideation, a complete loss of drive and motivation and significant weight gain. I now take 100mg lamotrigine once a day, 150 mg buproprion (Zyban) twice a day and 200 mg of quetiapine at night. I started fully on the new regime at the beginning of December folowing a severe manic episode when all my previous meds were low prior to starting the new regime - and when manic I stopped taking everything overnight - not something I'd recommend!! My weight has reduced very significantly since the valproate dose was gradually reduced (lost 2 stones in about 8 months!). You'll see from the December chart the effect the new meds have had. They have literally turned my life around.

Medications for December 2008
12-01-2008 - Present:Lamotrigine, 100 mg. Once a day
12-01-2008 - Present:Buproprion, 150 mg. Twice per day
12-01-2008 - Present:Quetiapine, 200 mg. Once a day at night
12-01-2008 - Present:Propranolol, 10 mg. As required

Have taken Lamictal for 1.5 years - titrated up to 100mg - 125 was too much

My Mood Rating Scale: +10= psychotic; -10 = suicide attempt

Unmedicated life before Lamictal:
---one -10 in lifetime
---two +9's and two -9's every year
---two +8's and also -8's every year
---two +7's and also -7's every year
---generally, rapid cycled between +5 and -6 every 14-21 days

After Lamictal:
---one -9 in the last eighteen months
---two -7's in the last eighteen months
---generally, rapid cycle between +3 and -4 every 14-21 days

Started taking the generic Lamictal as soon as it was available; noticed no difference.

Very happy with Lamictal, but I don't think the medication is soley responsible. Other contributing factors: excellent psychotherapy, enough sleep every night with no daytime napping, healthy food on a very regular schedule, daily exercise, not staying in the house or away from people for more than a day. Rarely can I make all of the factors "happen" at the same time consistently for more than a week or so; but when I do, I can usually stay between +2 and -3.

Hope this info helps.

I have taken both Depakote and Lamictal seperatly with only temporary luck . Depakote alone made me very depressed after 2 months and Lamictal put me into mania. I have Bipolar 1 rapid cycling and have tried every single medication for bipolar out there. Everything always had bad side effects or didn't work for me. I had to be hospitalized twice, once for depression and the other for uncontrolled mania. It wasn't until my last trip to the hospital that the dr. there put me on a combination of Depakote and Lamictal together with klonopin for anxiety. This is the first time in my life I have felt stable and balanced. It is the only thing that has worked for me and I have tried it all!!
