Well, I guess it is that time of year for me. I have come through the terrible fall when my mood crashes. I am grateful that it is fairly predictable that it settles back into baseline at about mid to late December. However, now my sleep is out of whack.

My Pdoc allows me to regulate my Seroquel based on my sleep needs. So, when I'm sleeping well, I take about 150mg's at bedtime. I'm allowed to adjust it upwards to 300mg's if my sleep starts to become disordered again. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been bumping up the Seroquel, until I am now at the 300mg level. I'm careful about my decision to adjust the meds because I don't want to be over sedated the next day. Anyway, at 300mg, my sleep is still bad. UGH!

I had to drive to the state capitol the other day (a little over an hour) to meet with the state agency that funds my local agency. On the way home, I was SO tired that I had to pull over and nap for a few minutes. I am WAY too young to be doing stuff like that. But, I was hazard on the road, if I didn't!! Sometimes I sit at my desk and zone out because I am so exhausted.

But, no matter what I do, I cannot sleep the whole night through. I'm wide awake at disgustingly early hours of the morning. The only one happy about me being awake is my puppy. She is absolutely thrilled to see me shuffle out of the bedroom.

I'm posting my sleep pie chart to show how often my sleep falls below 7 hours (my body's minimum requirement for genuine restorative sleep). I'm concerned that the lack of sleep might precipitate a mood swing (generally depression). I would HATE that. But, mostly I really just want to get some sleep. I'm tired. I want to feel better.

Be well
Jules

Quality sleep has been a lifelong struggle for me. A few months ago I discovered GABA and so far it is doing the trick. I started at 500mg and worked my way up to 2g which seems to be the perfect dose for me. I stupidly allowed myself to run out for about and month and tried substituting an increased dose of Taurine. My sleep suffered. I'm finally back up to 2g of GABA again and finally getting quality sleep again.

Oh Jules, I have so much sympathy with your sleep problems. It has been a lifelong issue for me too. It was only when I actually got in treatment I started getting decent sleep and everytime my meds get adjusted (like now) my sleep also goes to hell. I hope we get better soon and please continue to pull off the road whenever you need too--its better than an accident.
I am trying the Dark Therapy thing from Dr. Jim Phelp's book but I am not sure if its helping. Now I am having trouble with early waking which is a new problem for me--normally I have the "I can't get to sleep" problem.

Kef, Thank you for the information about GABA. I am familiar with GABA's influence in the brain from a neuroscience standpoint. But, I was not familiar with purchasing it as a supplement. I will discuss this with my Pdoc. He is quite open to supplementation. We have tried melatonin in the past. It didn't help. All I know is that I have GOT to get some sleep. I am really starting to get irritable.

Lizabeth, generally my sleep is very good, since my treatment began. It's a nice thing to get a full night's sleep. I had not slept well for years before I was properly diagnosed. But, for some reason, I go through these spells of early awakening. It is maddening. And.... I promise to keep pulling over. When I'm not depressed, my drive for self-preservation is very strong :)

OH... and I read you post about how things are going with your cymbalta titration. I'm sorry that it is mucking with your sleep. But, I'm glad that you have some flexibility in your schedule to be kind to yourself.

Be well,
Jules

Cristy, consistently being unable to sleep is something to talk to your Pdoc about. My doc wants to know if my sleep slips below 6 hours per night for more than 5 or 6 nights in a row. He is well aware that sleep and mood are intricately connected. So, if I'm starting a bad sleep cycle, he wants to nip it in the bud before it becomes a bad mood cycle.

That's the reason that he has given me permission to manage my Seroquel within certain limits. My Rx is from 100mg to 300mg depending upon how I'm sleeping. It has really helped.

Right now, I'm not sleeping well because I'm depressed. He added .5mg of Ativan for 5 days to try to reset my body clock. We'll see how that works. So far, I'm still not getting consistent sleep. It's making me nuts. I even wore my "grumpy" shirt today :)

Be well,
Jules

Jules,

I have exactly the same thing going on. I am scared to death to drive but my job requires that I do. It's completely maddening. I have had to take naps during the day and will doze off sitting at my desk. Why can't my body let me do that during the night?

my biggest problem is getting to sleep. i tried Seroquel, but was starting to get TD so stopped. pdoc gave me Ambien. weird things I don't remember occur. once I get to sleep, I will practically hibernate like a bear, but getting there is the problem. here it is 1:00 am, took Xanax and still can't fall asleep. I'll go back to laying down now, hope this one works.

Since I first posted, my Pdoc and I have tried a few different things. I really would like to get seven hours of sleep per night, or just a bit more (8 hours would be just perfect). But, I have had to come to grips with being happy with about six hours. That's about the best we can do.

We tried the new Seroquel XR. WOW..... I really like that medication. It works slowly at night instead of slamming me over the head. And, part of it remains in my system during the day to address depression. I was sleeping really well. I was on 300mg. However, I started to gain weight. I have had weight loss surgery. So, we don't need to do ANYTHING that impacts my weight.

We have finally settled back down to a lower dose of regular Seroquel. And, like I said, I can generally get about 6 hours of sleep. It is not the perfect solution, but it is a livable solution.

be well,
Jules

As you can see I take a lot of more natural supplements. The main things that seem to be helping my sleep be more regular is GABA, wearing a blindfold and listening to something relaxing for about 45 minutes as I fall asleep.

As you can see I take a lot of more natural supplements. The main things that seem to be helping my sleep be more regular is GABA, wearing a blindfold and listening to something relaxing for about 45 minutes as I fall asleep.

hey everyone i'm new here, i've been struggling with sleep for years. i have periods where i find it really hard to sleep at all to very long sleeping patterns, its like my body is trying to overcompensate for the lack of sleep and then just crashes.

when i am able to sleep i end up waking every half hour to hour and makes me very irritable, i've been taught that breathing will help me drop off but in all honesty it doesn't help at all. my body may be exhausted but my mind will be wide awake. this is the main reason i've joined here to monitor my moods (i have depression also) and my sleep.

Welcome Boo!

I think you'll find the mood and sleep tracking useful and there are also several good suggestions already in this thread. One thing that has helped me a lot is wearing a blindfold at night and not turning any lights on when I do wake up (several times) at night. I am able to get backto sleep much faster.

Jules, have you had a Sleep Study? If you haven't, maybe you should consider it. I've had two and at the last one they diagnosed me with Narcolepsy. I had to quit my job and am now on Disability. Sometimes I don't sleep well, also awakening in the middle of the night. Other times, like now, I can sleep for 12 hours a day. I never know from day to day how my sleep will be. Anyway, please consider the Sleep Study.
