Last week I began taking Xyrem. I was really afraid to take it. They call it "the date rape drug." I didn't know what to expect. But I was very surprised! For the first time in years, I slept straight through the night. You take your first dose around 10:00 or 11:00. Then you set your alarm clock for 4 hours later. You wake up and take your next dose. Then you basically conk out again. And you wake up feeling refreshed! On Tuesday night I increased my dose. Now I sleep even better. And next week I increase it again. It's a very controlled drug. You can't get it from your local pharmacy or drug plan. You have to get it through the Xyrem company. A nurse calls you every week and you can also speak to a pharmacist if you need to. They're very nice. My medication is sent to a FedEx office because you have to sign for it. They send it once a month. So if anyone is afraid of this medication, you don't have to be. Oh, another thing. You have to stop eating 2 hours before you go to sleep, or else you can get very nauseous. So this is helping me to lose weight. So as I said, if you need it, go for it!

I take Xyrem for narcolepsy for the last year and a half. It has helped my excessive daytime sleepiness, mild cataplexy and sleep paralysis 100%, that is, as long as I take it. If I miss a night or two, they come back.

I have bipolar disorder as well. The xyrem is at times very stimulating for me, so I need to be careful and work with my pdoc to get the right balance of all my meds.

I have lost a lot of weight since on xyrem & feel much better physically.

Why are you taking it? do you have narcolepsy?

All the best to you.

I am taking Xyrem because I have Narcolepsy and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. I wake up pretty refreshed. I haven't missed a dose yet. It's working well for me. I have lost some weight. Do you think Xyrem makes you lose weight? If so, that's great!

I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy in 2005. It totally freaked me out. Last year I was up for 3 days and ended up in my doctor's office, half psychotic. It was really scary. None of the sleep meds helped me. I started taking Xyrem out of desperation.

Thanks!

Hi, I am glad you are feeling good and have lost weight. That is wonderful.

It is interesting that you brought up weight loss. have lost a lot of weight, since starting Xyrem. there are multiple reasons, at least in my case:

1. getting quality sleep and not being utterly exhausted all the time helped me to have the stamina and energy to exercise.

2. I have heard that Xyrem helps pain from fibromyalgia (which I have). My chronic pain level are greatly decreased. There have been drug studies to check that and I heard they were promising, but Xyrem is not yet FDA approved for fibromyalgia.

3, I also have Lupus---and this is being managed better as well.

4. I have heard that weight loss is a side effect of Xyrem. I had been trying to lose weight for a year before starting Xyrem. I had only lost 20 pounds. I have been on Xyrem for a year and a half. Now I have lost 70 more pounds, I still need to maintain a healthy and portion controlled diet and exercise....to keep all the weight off. I needed to lose this much and feel like a new person. I have heard that 20-30lb weight loss is common on Xyrem.

I have also heard that Xyrem can help fibromyalgia and promote weight loss. I'm not as hungry as I used to be. But I had something really terrible happen the other night. I took my dose of Xyrem, - 3.75 - and at 5:30 a.m. I woke up. I went into my husband's office across the hall, and tried to pull the cushions off of the sofa -bed in there. I kept yelling "I can't get them off, I can't get them off." I woke up my husband with my yelling. He couldn't get me to stop. I threw all his papers off of the sofa. I was a mess! So I called the Xyrem office and they told me to call my doctor. Well, my doctor's office is closed on Fridays. I left a message but no one calls you back. I have to wait until Monday for him to tell me what to do. I'm really upset about this. I was actually sleep-walking! Has this ever happened to you?
