Does anyone else have worse depression when you are on your period? I'm on mine & I noticed I'm feeling immensely depressed..not sure if it's the regular BP thing or if it's intensified because of my period..irritability is worse right now too, not like it's not normally bad...insight?

I am having irritability and depression also. I have noticed that the week I am going to start my period is the worst. I just joined so I can track my moods better and see if there is a correlation. How is the Lithium working for you? I have been on it for one year this month. They started me at 600mg and now I'm at 1200mg.

I have had depressed moods and high irritability right before and during the first couple days of my period. I also get migraine headaches around that time. My dx is bp2 rapid cycling more depressed than hypomanic. I used to take depakote for mood swings but it made me gain 35 pounds. I now take Lyrica which is for fibromyalgia which I also have. Two for the price of one. I am 53 now and still have a monthly cycle. My BP disorder is just wild for the week before and a few days into my period. Always has been this way. I tried birth control pills, progesterine and estrogen... makes me worse. I hope your problems gets easier with age. Dealing with it does get better when you finally figure out what's going on. I think mood tracker is great - showing me a lot already in a week's time. Good luck. and Happy New Year

My mood is mostly affected about a week before the period starts. It's not always the same in intensity but most of the time noticeable. It tends to lean towards depression and irritability. The night before my period I can hardly sleep. I just read all night. Once I have my period things go back to normal again (whatever that might mean).

I'm on Lithium also (900mg) since early Dec and so far it is working great. Cycling stopped completely. Made me realize that I was mostly in a manic state of mind over the last 12 years.

When I was having my periods, I was more irritable and moody. After my period was over, I'd be back to normal - whatever that is. Now that I don't have periods anymore, I don't know what blame the irritability and moodiness on, except the bi polar.

Hi, I''m 48 female, bp ----- I see a definate difference 1-wk to 10 days prior to my period. I'm experience mild to moderate depression mostly during winter months, BUT out of this world PMS a week prior. I can't wait to see some blood, I know relief is coming.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's also Vit D deficiency, or Throid due to Lithium -- I feel so fkn nuts right now. Chopping at my hair, making a mess, eating way too much, constipated.

Sorry for going on, thought I'd chime in and say YES YES YES it's PMS and being BIPOLAR doesn't help any. There are times I don't know where the bp ends or begins and addition to pms --- there has to be a solution to get thru this rotten time.

IRRITABLE, no kidding.
Thanks for listening ladies

I actually have the opposite problem. My mood is best when I'm on my period (now) and gradually gets worse until I start again. I have uncontrollable irritability and hostiliy. I don't know if I've always been like this, but now that I'm getting closer to menopause (41) maybe that's the reason for the reversal? Not sure. All I know is that I have about a 1 week period of sanity, followed by 3 weeks of torture.

Hi Ladies,
I'm 60 now, and here's my story. Hope it provides more info.
Was a very ill, allergic child. When my periods began, the migraines began, always the week before my period. Also the angry, manic phase and then depression during my period.
Around 1980, the pattern got so bad I'd be in the ER and with blood pressure over 180, almost a seizure thing. Finally, the docs were tracking it and giving me hormone therapy to correct it.
Late in the 1980's they finally admitted that women can actually be allergic to their own hormones.
Finally had a total hysterectomy in 1992. Not even the inkling of a migraine ever again, and the manic angry cycles got much milder and follow a different pattern. Don't recommend this for everyone, but it's the fact for me.
Healthier now than I've ever been, but still working on finding a baseline.
Keep trying, even if that means spending the day in bed.

Hi, very interesting. I never felt I had problems with periods, hormones, moods much when I was in my youth, I felt it more when I hit 35.

I look to do the day I don't have periods any longer, yet that doesn't mean that my normones won't continue to do a dance on my head, right?

I feel the flair up of aches pains, you name it 10-days prior only when I beginto bleed do I find some confort and sanity. Being manic depressive and being dx'd so late in life (now on meds) for same I manage, but I do notice that there's a big difference once a month where I wonder IS IT my rapid cycling bipolar kicking me, or is it just the hormonal imbalance playing me so rudely.

I'm so thrilled to hear that you are symptom free now and healthy living a good life. Thank you for sharing.

I'm in perimenopause stage and have been for several years now, irregular periods. I would like them to cease completely . I hope and pray when that day arrives I'll get to enjoy some relief like you are now. I've heard stories about keeping your period goign as long as you can, being the better way, Suzanne Somers I can't recollect fully now - but the meaning behind that iis that when it ends, you're bascially dying off, women aging faster than men syndrome. I don't know how much of that is truth. Any comments?

Let me start by saying...OMG I recognize myself in you all and it's nice to finally feel like I'm not alone and that there are other people who GET IT!!!

I'm 36 years old. I just started taking lithium this past Friday. I was PMSing that Monday when I went to see my Dr. but had to wait for pay day to get the rx filled. I'm on day 6 of taking the medication, making today day TEN of awful pain with cramps and sore breasts. My mood, however, for the first time in years, is good during all of this. My question is, can lithium delay the onset of the period? (I've not gotten a reply from my Drs office yet!) No moody Heather during this time, but I've not taken my bra off, other than to shower, for 10 days now because my boobs hurt so freakin' bad.

Thanks for any reply.

I have been on lithium for a year. I track my periods and it did delay them a few days. I would go 30 or more days in between. You aren't alone! This website is great for us bipolar women. Keep track of your moods it will really help.

Hi everyone..this is my first post but im really glad to have found a place of support like this..im so discouraged after reading through this thread though and other sites too pertaining to pmmd and bipolar and meds.it seems like so many of us struggle tyring to find the right meds. do they even work? im 37 and have had very bad depression relating to my period since my early teens. I haven't been on any meds since my early 20s. i am on clonazapem 1mg as needed for generalized anxiety. I am so discouraged. and it seems what works for one person may not work for another. i haven't been able to work in over 10yrs because of terrible mood swings. social anxiety and obssessive worry i would say i fall into the bipolar 2 category also. but the worse part is the major monthly depression that seems to accompany my period.it wipes me out..i go into isolation and i get either very depressed or very angry/irritible... I did try birth control pills years ago to remove my period and that worked. but i really am bad at staying on meds. i hate them. now i feel birth control pills are risky for my age and history of smoking plus im obese.
im pretty sure i have pmmd. idk. i just feel hopeless. i have no idea what meds to try??? should i go for a moodstabilizer, progesterone, estrogen, ssri's, I have no idea. and this is why ive avoided taking meds. many of them are toxic. but chronic depression/pmmd has robbed me of a stable life too. im lost. can anyone offer me any advice and sorry to be so debby downer. im in the middle of a terrible low just coming off of my period. thanks for listening.

Have you tried a mood stabilizer ie Lithium for your manic depression? I take Lithiium and Klonopin. Sometimes Seroquel if my mania goes too high. However, that said I'm moderately depressive at this time with a period around the corner. I wish they would just end.

Looking at your age, I would suggest you talk to your Dr about what kind of mood stabilizers are available for you to start. Hormone therepy may not be the answer. Not a this time anyway. I'm not a Dr, but what I do know if you are Bipolar you truly need to have a fair try at a mood stabilizer as Bipolar illness doesn't just go away on it's own, it's progressive left untreated.

And yes, you would have to take them every day for the rest of your life. That said I don't lilke taking mine, but IF I go off them my moods swing harder and find myself horribly unstable either manic or depressed or both at the same time.

I'm miserable right now, I probably shouldn't be writing. But I thought I would as I saw your message come thru a while back now. Sorry for the late response.

I hope more people will chime in as far as getting your bipolar controlled.
The best to you

I haven't seen this forum get much attention, apparently I posted in the wrong place about my irritability....I wish the change would hurry up and be changed already. I can't tell if its being manic or I'm pmsing because I haven't had a period in over 60 days. I did peg myself as moderately elevated today.
I'm hoping I'm nearing the end, I don't get hot flashes or night sweats anymore thank goodness! I could deal with the hot flashes, but night sweats were the pits...I'd wake up soaking wet and freezing, unable to move...hub would have to help me change clothes. I put the fast heartbeat to both the change and anxiety I was feeling for such a long time.
so right now its the mood and the irregular periods that I have going on. I'm not usually so irritated as I have been this past week.
I hope a couple of people in my life figure out they'd better not come at me, cause I'll f*&% them up. big words, tiny woman. I probably won't say boo. or I might!

Medications for March 2011
02-02-2011 - Present:lamictal, 200 mg. 1/day
02-02-2011 - Present:effexor, 75 mg. 1/day
02-02-2011 - Present:seroquel, 300 mg. 1/night
02-02-2011 - Present:klonopin, .5. as needed for anxiety

you say psycho like its a bad thing

Hi. I just found this site. I'm 33 years old and Ive been medicated on about 23 different meds since 1998. Fun times.

I had a baby in April of 2009. I stopped all my meds cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant in August 2008. (I got lucky and didnt go crazy.. not supposed to stop cold turkey :) hehe. After having her I never returned to meds and have been doing good until November 2010.

Right now I'm trying to figure out what my problem is. We want another kid, and since I'm most normal when pregnant, we figured get me pregnant, have the last kid, then either go back on meds or see what happens.

But my moods are so incredibly bad lately, especially about 2 days before my period and 2 days into it that I thought I would try to go back on birth control because *I* think its hormone related even though my OB says my hormones are fine. But I figured trying birth control is a good start, and if that doesnt work I may need full on meds again.

It seems like after I get done with my period, I go manic right away. Then Im normal for awhile until I ovulate. (Since I was trying to get pregnant, I've been charting ovulation) But it seems like when I ovulate, I get crazy again. Mad at the world and depressed a bit.

I dont understand this because my OB says my hormones are great... their answer is medications for bipolar. My therapist says he doesnt think I NEED medications (yet atleast) but he thought I should try the birth control.

So I just feel crazy. I don't know what the problem is, I dont know if its just incredible stress or ..? Im just tired of being a b!tch outta nowhere and snapping at everyone :( They act like I enjoy it or something..

yay! (?) I finally had a period after like 64 days. I think its lasted 3 days. I won't argue with that. so I don't know if that other week was just some serious pmsing, a rise in mood or both together. its back down and I'm on some different meds for other mood problems that occurred alongside.
keep our fingers crossed. its hell sometimes being a woman. even without an illness.

Yes I have a serious problem with depression during my period and pre menstrual time. Finally about 3 years ago I talked to my gynecologist about this (she knew I had bipolar 1 as well) and she put me on a birth control pill called reclipsen and gave me a PMDD diagnosis. Well my insurance recently switched me over form reclipsen to apri (which is reclipsen's generic). I take the pills for 3 months straight and then am off 1 week..so I only have 4 periods per year. My life is alot better now. I still have some depression that is over and above the PMDD since I have bipolar. Usually though my moods don't run low consistantly so I try to combat depression thru getting moving or out in the sunshine or by acting opposite to my emotion. None of these things are easy but I won't get on an antidepressant unless absolutely neccessary since they cause me extra weight gain.

Medications for April 2011
01-01-2007 - Present:Apri, 1 mg. 1 a day for 3 months then off a week
06-01-2008 - Present:Klonopin, 1 mg. As needed for anxiety
12-01-2010 - Present:Equetro, 200 mg. 1 pill in morning 2 pills at night

After 12 months of tracking my moods I can confirm my mood swings have nothing to do with my periods.. i wish it were otherwise as then the treatment is so straight forward...

Hi ladies, I am new here. I do not have bi-polar (as far as I know at this point) however my mom had severe bi-polar 1 and my brother has bi-polar 2. I have been taking 20 mgs of fluoexitine for 3 weeks now for depression. I have horrible pms lasting around 10 days a month and only feel "normal" when my period starts and then the cycle starts again. Within a couple of weeks of taking the medication I felt so much better..had not felt this good in a very long time. I honestly thought it was alleviating my pms symptoms, however I am now 5 days late (no way I could be prego). I am starting to feel mildly depressed and have bouts of anxiety. Could my period be late because of the medication and I am just now starting to feel pms? Any thoughts will be helpful.

Current medications as of 04-26-2011
04-06-2011 - Present: fluexotine, 20 mg. one time daily
04-26-2011 - Present: Zolpidem, 5 mg. as needed for sleep

Hello, I don't know if the Anti-Depressant can cause you to be late w/your period. I do wonder if you are in the peri-menopausal stage where your periods become irregular, as in 'late'. You may be 'of age' if you will.

I'm like you I get 10 good solid days of hellfire woman just prior to my period, when my period starts I begin to feel my moods improve. It's as if I can't wait to bleed omg. Or stop periods altogether. I wonder if after 1 full year of not having periods if moods improve!!?!!

PS I carry bipolar the severe kind, bp-1. Your so fortunate that seeing your brother and mother are both bipolar that you aren't, wow, you're a lucky lady in that respect. I hate to say this, if you are bipolar and don't think that you are, IF you take an anti-depressant and ARE bipolar the anti-depressants are notorious to bring forward the illness, that is if you have it. Keep tracking your moods;)

Did you experience ANXIETY before you started the Anti-Depressants? I would be concerned if you still get the anxiety like you are now in the mext few months. Maybe it's merely hormonal reaction, maybe it's not. Try not to worry, but if you begin to feel more and more anxiety and irritability and agitation, loss of sleep, advise your Dr asap. PS don't ever go cold turkey off that med you'll feel worse.

Stay in touch.
Lex

Hi Lex,
It is possible I could be starting perimenopause except I have never had a late period ever until I started this medication. I am 37. I had anxiety before I started the medication. I have been "down" for a couple of years and have tried every holistic, natural approach possible to feeling depressed. I finally gave in to my doctor's advice and am taking the fluoexitine. I have also heard that anti depressants can cause a manic episode so I am watching myself very closely. This site is really great. I also take Ambien as needed to help me sleep..I have horrible insomnia, especially when I am stressed out.

I totally agree with Lex. beware!! I knew I was bipolar for years as a kid (self diagnosed because no one else would) but I knew squat about the meds.. and a doctor put me on paxil without taking into consideration my moods, my cutting, my everything else.. it sent me way way manic! Ruined yet might have saved my life, depends on how you look at it.

I would LOVE to take Prozac, you have no idea! Its truly the happy pill.. But i know taking it without a mood staiblizer is probably going to turn bad! but then again, life sucks how it is, so bad might be better then now!

I just had my daughter two years ago, and it seems like ever since then, now my hormones or something are off and this sudden RAGE and depression is full blown. I was thinking I could be menopausal or something, but I'm only 33 and my mom didnt go thru that young or anything... I thought I only raged when it was my ovulation and my period days, well, im thinking that my ovulation is off because I should have ovulated yesterday, but I went into a rage last thursday I think? Kinda explains alot as to why I was unsuccessful at trying for a second child.

I wish I knew what was wrong wtih me :(

Sorry to wander on my post, im just having a really bad night and my 98% unsupportive husband is being a real jerk...

definitely watch yourself on the prozac... but in the meantime if its helping good for you! And ive never had any of my meds mess with my periods.. so not sure on that one!
