It is well documented that those of us with cyclothymia are creative, gifted and talented writers... your voice matters, and these descriptions will help us connect and help others understand and gain insight into our disorder... say something : )

Hi jensue,
I'll try to give you the skinny on cyclothymia,
But if you google it, you'll learn in greater detail all about it... Especially if you think you might have it. Cyclothymia is a mood/personality disorder. Cyclothymics are manic depressive... Bipolar... But it's on the mild side of the spectrum. Closer to characteristics of bipolar II just milder, but still can be quite debilitating, ruin relationships, and put you through the ringer!! We cycle between periods of hypomania, normal moods, and depression. In the hypomanic state, (not as severe as manic but very similar) we are full of energy and enthusiasm. Our brains are working at warp speed and our mouths can't keep up. Many of us like our hypomanic times because we are at our most creative, whatever art we are gifted in just seems
to pour out of us. Since the mind is zoomin, we can operate on very little sleep and our appetite disappears. We get especially irritable, even outbursts of anger and rage. We could call it artistic temperament until diagnosed and realize we were in this state. That's one thing about cyclothymia, because the symptoms are not pronounced, many of us don't even know we have it. It ravaged my life but I didn't know I had cyclothymia til i was 43. On the down side of depression, we lose all enthusiasm for former pasttime activities, we just want to stay at home, no social interaction, sleep a lot, carb out beyond normal, weepy like hormonal weepiness,
The clouds seem gray with no hope of sunshine. If we aren't diagnosed or on medication, many of us tend to self medicate with alcohol and marijuana... This is a biochemical condition. Our bodies don't retain or produce enough lithium which effects our seratonin levels in the neuro transmitters in the brain. I'm no scientist, lots of reading and talking to my psych doc to learn all I can... And I'm still learning! Hope this helps.

Wow, sounds just like me...although I have been partially diagnosed (pending the long term mood tracking results) with a mild form of rapid cycling bipolar 2 disorder. However everything above I can relate to.....are they the same or similar things? I didn't get any help (due to pride and self medication) for 20 years, finally giving in at 37. I'm lucky enough to have stayed above baseline for a while which is great as I have generally remained "mildly elevated" for a while. My work think I'm majorly creative...little do they know that I just plan certain projects well ahead...in time for a high point...hang on, this now sounds like "over analysis"...am I on a high?? Lets see what the future brings.

Best wishes to you all

Hi Rijono!
I think that the "rapid cycling part" might move you from mild bipolar to bipolar 2... the great thing is that you've been able to function and your symptoms have been mild. If th bp was majorly impacting your life, I'm sure you would have sought help sooner.(although, I was clueless about this condition and figured, "this is just how I am." It's difficult to face the idea that we have mental health issues! baaaahaaa! Now that you're on the road to wellness and balance, even though mild, like cyclothymia, it takes its toll on every aspect of life : ( The more you learn, the more empowered you will be!" You're very brave to walk this path after 20 years of avoiding it. I truly believe that bipolar people are highly creative and we have a special gift. The gift... you've accessed your gifting consistently and with long term planning, you can still create in ways that shock your coworkers! I don't think you're being manic in your sharing at all! You're just starting to explore and wrap your mind around this condition - analyze all you want! I certainly did! It did start to kick me into a hypomanic state because my mind was starting to obsess as I had such a hunger to learn about this thing that pervaded every aspect of my life since I was 20! I found out last summer and I'll soon be 44. Two decades of ignorance, and I'm starting to feel "normal" for the first time. Seek out the best psychiatrist and psychologist in your area and take the plunge! Let us know how your journey is going : )

Hi Pixelfairy and Rgdemark,
Your words were so encouraging and touched my heart deeply. It's so easy to sit at home and feel isolated because nobody understands or even has a desire to walk with me on this journey. Thank you for being able to connect to my own thoughts and feelings. I don't feel so alone with precious words from you that connect us as we relate to each other's life experiences : )

I've nefer been categorized as Cyclothymic. I suppose probably because depression is my main mood and I am depressed about 60% of the time? Or is it a fairly new classification? How I do long for and cherish my hypomania! I almost never have had a full blown severely manic episode. My hospitalizations have always been related to severe depression associated and/or preceded by severe anxiety and days of zero sleep. I was once given four ECT's until they were discontinued because the were not working. That isn't cyclothymia is it?
