This little supplement has been a life saver dealing with Bipolar. I am not on prescription meds. I have been Bipolar long enough to know what works and what doesn't. Sleep is imperative to me having stability and being baseline throughout the day. I have green tea in the mornings only, no coffee and no energy drinks. I take 2 mg of Melatonin I found at GNC that melt in your mouth (buy one get one free) and it has been my saving grace. The only thing with taking it is you must dim your monitor screen if on it, and cell phone, also turn off the lights. Before I know it I'm fast sound asleep. I don't wake up groggy like over the counter or prescription sleep aids does. I wake up refreshed with a clear mind and best of all I got my sleep waking up baseline.

Medications for May 23, 2014 to June 22, 2014
06-19-2014 - Present:Melatonin, 2 mg. Every Night

I wish it worked for me. Ambien did BUT I had to stop taking it bc after more than 2 yrs of taking it and getting better sleep I REALIZED I was playing with fire the whole time. I have been in recovery from drinking and drugging for over 4 yrs & one night I took my Ambien & did not lay down to sleep THEN I don't remember anything except that I HAD to go run an errand in my car. I eventually got pulled over and arrested for DUI.

Dual Diagnosis can be tricky. What sucks is that Ambien worked better than anything for over 2 yrs. Sleepy Time tea or Calms Forte work better than melatonin does for me anyway. Trazadone didn't work, Seroquel had too many side effects and Remeron didn't do anything either. So I'm back to being "up" for a couple/three nights then being really tired and not up to par at work for a day or so. This pattern has been with me since I was a child and is part of what led to my BP type 1 dx. Some people disagree w/the BP dx & think I really only have ADHD.

What works best for me is having a healthy (daily) balance of exercise, good food choices, making sure to have fun &/or leisure time and meditation.

That's uncomfortable when you cannot sleep. Just found out myself the night before last my melatonin for the first time that I did not work no matter what. I took some more after staying up all night that morning and still I could not sleep. Fortunately after taking another dose last night I fell asleep. My system is sensitive so I cannot take really strong stuff like Ambien, isn't that like a narcotic? I'm sorry that happened to you. I used to drink Sleepy Time Tea 20 years ago, but I'm not into teas anymore. I know why my melatonin didn't work because I abruptly stopped taking it for a few nights trying to see if I could fall asleep on my own, bad idea, I need my melatonin. What will you do now? My brother has chronic insomnia as well and he takes this stuff he ordered online called phenibut, he takes like a third of a teaspoon. It's a white powdery substance. He says it knocks him out because melatonin isn't effective each time he takes it. Maybe you should look into it.

I am on ambien. Most of the time it is ok but I do have an occasional episode that I don't remember. For me it is always eating. I learned the hard way to stay off my computer after I took it and a few times had conversations with people that I didn't recall. Now I just watch TV for a few minutes and then go to bed. I give myself 15 minutes after taking it before I need to be in bed.

I might give melatonin a try. Two of my sons take it (5 mg).

I believe phenobarbital is a prescription drug used for seizures (at least it used to be...my brother took it for epilepsy).

Sometimes if I have an extra busy day, I will fall asleep without my ambien but most nights I would be awake all night without it. I already know what lack of sleep does to me. I am more scared of that than I am of the ambien.

Yeah,

what a nightmare no longer taking Ambien was for a good month or more. It was like a detox I swear! Hardcore.

Anyway, my p-doc put me on a powerful antihistamine called hydroxizine (sp?). It had a very delayed effect and I was only super sleepy all day the next day without sleeping that evening. Of course the same chemistry that makes me part of the 10% of the population that has substance abuse issues builds tolerance in the blink of an eye.

I really wish I could take sedative/hypnotic drugs like Ambien or Soma because they fricken work. Alas I cannot due to my addictive nature. So I'm back trying the homeopathic stuff again. Now I'm out of school and can exercise and pay more attention to what and how I'm eating. We'll see how it goes.
