I think getting a second opinion from another psychiatrist is always a good idea. I saw the same pdoc for about 4 years, a ton of med changes, and things just weren't getting better. So I went to get a second opinion from another pdoc to basically ask if they agreed with my current pdoc's methods of treatment or if they had any better ideas. It's nice to either have confirmation that your doc is doing what other doctors would do, or find out if someone has some fresh ideas. I eventually changed pdoc's and feel like the one I have now really listens to me and makes adjustments based on what I tell him--rather than putting all of his faith into the medications. In my experience, some pdocs are so sure that certain meds work that they'll continue to push them despite the fact that you're not getting better--it seems they believe in the power of the medication more than they believe what you're telling them about lack of improvement in your mood. Just my opinion though. I think it's important to find a pdoc you trust, one who listens, and one who will work with you on a treatment plan (with your input) to find something that works for you.

to soandso,
Your input is well thought out and reasonable. (Just what I need) . Truthfully I have been thinking about this, but sometimes it is hard to get up the nerve to do this. It sounds like you have had a sucessful experience. This is just the nudge I need ,I have the names of Pdocs already, I need action, after all it just a phone call and then follow instructions. Thank you much Johnd

Yes, Yes--I vote for second opinions on just about any medical issue--docs are people too and anyone can make a mistake or get stuck in a rut and not really hear you.

Another good thing to look for, do the people at your care place work as a team? I know my pdoc listens to input from my talk therapy person and it has helped a lot with getting me diagnosed correctly.
