I'm thinking about substituting my zoloft with trazodone to treat my depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. If you've tried it, or if you are currently taking it, let me know your experiences with it. Thanks!

Trazadone helps me sleep, but as far as treating depression and anxiety, at least for me, it doesn't work as well as an SSRI.

Trazadone is a medication that is generally used for sleep... but as an antidepressant, it isn't one that typically does the trick. Actually, it has kind of flunked as an antidepressant. Docs usually use it in conjuction with another antidepressant as a sleep aid. But, it is rarely used as a stand-alone antidepressant.

I can't take it for sleep... it makes me hypomanic. Can we say opposite of sleep??? lol

Be well,
Jules

Trazodone helps me to sleep a full eight hours every night and helps with depression. I frequently wake up in my sleep from anxiety so it helps me fall back asleep. I can't say it helps too much with anxiety so I also take 15mg of buspar in the morning and at night along with taking trazodone before bed.

I was put on 150mg and that made me gain a bit of weight so I cut down to 100mg and I lost the weight I put on. 100mg is still a good enough dosage to help my symptoms. Sometimes I get muscle stiffness too as a side-effect but that doesn't bother me too much, I'll just do some stretches and will usually feel better.

Current medications as of 10-11-2009
02-11-2008 - Present: generic brand zyrtec, 1 pill. 1 pill before bed every night during allergy season.
08-11-2008 - Present: trazodone, 100mg. every day before bed
10-01-2008 - Present: B12, 1000 mg. 1000 mg before bed time (for B12 deficiency)
09-15-2009 - Present: klonopin, .5. whenever i'm having a panic attack or an extremely anxio
10-01-2009 - Present: Iron supplement, 325mg. Before bed every day (for anemia).
10-08-2009 - Present: buspar, 15 mg. 15mg in the morning and before bed
10-11-2009 - Present: gummy vitamin, 1 mg. 1 before bed every day.

Trazedone can enhance dreams. If you have alot of nightmares I wouldn't recommend it. If you have weird trippy dreams and you enjoy them then by all means go for it.

for what it's worth though I had awful muscle spasms and felt like a zombie all day when I was on it. I don't think it mixed well with Lexapro, which I was also on at that tiime and which I later found out is completely contraindicated for use together.

trazadone knocked me out and when i woke up the next morning i was in so much pain and it felt like my inside were on fire. i was sick for days untill i finally called my doctor and he told me to stop taking it. i guess it reacted bad to my medication or just my body.
i was on prozac at the time, but now im on zoloft and it works for me pretty good.
good luck!

I have found Trazodone to be very helpful keeping me asleep. It made a huge difference in me getting the 'right" kind of deep sleep. Any side effects went unnoticed because I was so happy. As my body adjusted to the healthier forms of sleep the euphoria wore off but I still feel so much better. I have fibro and am unemployable in most senses so there are other issues...
I have been on Trazodone 200 mg for over a year and it still works for me in conjunction with other drugs..

01-07-2010 - Present: dexedrine, 5 mg. two in morning

Oh man! Ever since I started taking Trazodone I have had a sore throat. It's much, much worse in the mornings and then I have a headache all day. I contacted my pNP and am awaiting a call on what to do.

I also have been going into deep, deep sleep with the trazodone. Like, when I wake up in the morning, the only way I know I've slept is because the time is different. Not only that, but I wake up several hours earlier than I should be, as if as soon as the Trazodone wears off I am awake.

Hey, KSP. I have been taking trazodone for 4 years, mainly for insomnia, and it has worked very well for me at 100 mg. I usually get 6 hours of solid, deep sleep. But I have noticed that since starting lithium 2 weeks ago, the traz is not working as well.
