I have found a balance between using holistic and chemical. For years I studied in India and Mexico and found that herbs and meditation help with depression, anxiety, bipolar and just about every other mental illness. A good diet that is free of chemicals helps. The herbs that helped changed my life are:
Holy Basil for anxiety
Gaba Chewables for when I feel a panic attack
Spending less time on the computer and more time in nature has helped SOOOOO MUCH!!!!
Fresh air and sunshine! It's hard when you are depressed, but even just 20 minutes a day in the sun with fresh air will help. I do a 50-50 balance to make sure I'm doing my work...but also spending the time I need in nature.
Gratitude List. Every morning list 10 things you are grateful for -- even if you wake up sad --- do it.
There is hope. There is harmony. You can do this and you are NOT ALONE!
