Hi Everyone,
I'm a teenage girl suffering from Bipolar Disorder. I recently suffered a period of severe depression and attempted to take my own life. I was misdiagnosed and told I had clinical depression therefore was put on antidepressants. I am debating whether or not to return to school, and if I do choose to return to school I am unsure of how to handle how people are going to treat me since they know I tried to end my life. I'm also unsure of how to explain my condition without people thinking I'm crazy. Any Advice?

Sweenk..
I teach H S and know that teen girls can be and often are mean and intentionally cruel. And I know that for many, maybe most, of my stoonts, the social part of school IS school. It takes a strong person to face down the demons you've already dealt with and come through that fire whole.
Easier said than done, but -I- wouldn't fret (worry) too much about explaining ANYTHING .But keep this in mind, if you decide to tell anyone the way it "really" is, be ready for EVERYONE to know.
Good luck, stay strong.

Thanks Sirkay,I'm headed back to school tomorrow and your advice helped. I don't have to explain anything to anyone, its my business!

I have a question, for anyone who may have answers.
-I'm on a mood stabilizer, is it going to make me feel blah, so I won't have swings or will I still be able to be happy?

Sweenk.

If the mood stabilizer is right for you, you should be able to get happy and sad just not to the extreme that you have been. The moods should also fit. I.e. You won't get sad when happy is called for etc...

It may seem at first that you have no emotions because you are used to them being so strong but try really paying attention to how you feel. Give it a few weeks to get used to.
If it does actually take away your emotional responses talk to your PDOC and get the med changed.

There are many medicines and many combinations so don't get discouraged if the first one you try doesn't work perfectly.

I'm sorry you had a rough go of it.

It can take awhile to get the meds straightened out and to find what works best for you. Just remember to hang in there and to seek help when you need it.

sweenk,

You will find that you are a very strong young woman. Those of us who deal with this disorder can't be anything but strong. You may not feel strong, but feelings are not facts. You can put one foot in front of the other and do what you need to do. And if you need to... just think to yourself and smile... "I am woman, hear me roar!" (but, don't roar, dear... that might bring funny looks... lol)

It would be a great idea to find a support group of some sort to walk with you in this journey. Ask your doctor or the counselor if there is a support group that you can connect with. Support groups are wonderful places to meet people who share the same struggles as you. That way, you don't have to keep things secret there.

I hope that all went well at school. Please let us know!

Be well,
Jules

I went back to school today and things didn't go well, my roommate had moved out and told everyone what had happened without knowing the whole story. I decided it would be best to finish out my year at home with my family and friends here to support me. I'm feeling better and becoming more positive. Thank you for all of your help!
