Do any of you get manic around the time of your periods? Is this normal?

I don't get extremely manic, but I have noticed that my sex drive pretty much triples about a week before my period.

Humm...I don't really get like the fun feel good type of mania. I get the irritable "wake up a grizzly bear with a burr in his paw" type of mania.

I really don't know. I guess its possible. I was diagnosed with PMDD first, so who knows.

Medications for June 2009
04-01-2009 - Present:Zyrtec, 10 mg. Once at night
04-20-2009 - Present:Depakote, 1500 mg. Once Daily at bedtime
05-13-2009 - Present:Ambien, 5 mg. At bedtime

It is extremely common for women of child bearing age to have significant mood shifts in association with their menstrual cycle. I, for one, a perfect example of this. My mood departures were so jarring to my system (and to EVERYONE else around me), that my team (my Pdoc, my GYN, and my Primary Care Doc) decided it was best to simply stop my period.

I am 47 years old, and perimenopausal. So, stopping my period is no big deal. We hope to stop it until I am completely past menopause. That is A-OK with me!! I tried "continuous" birth control at first (taking the pill, but skipping the placebo week and going straight to the next pack). However, after about 6 months, I began to have periods again (along with that monster that moved into my skin before every period).

So, now I have Mirena... an IUD. So far, so good. I have not had a true period since it was placed. Therefore, I have not had the monster re-visit me, my family, my staff, or my friends. It is like a miracle. Those few days before my period were SO horrible that I just didn't think I would live through it.

Now that I look at my chart.... it is BEAUTIFUL. Even with the recent death of my Mother, my chart is unbelievable. I am SO grateful.

Be well,
Jules
