Just a bit of an update for anyone who was following my post "HELP: Gen-Divalproex"

I had Lithium Toxicity and had concerns about going on Epival (Divalproex) after going through that considering the similarity of the medications.

I was right to have concern when I hit 750mg and I had sub-dermal hemorrhaging on most of the soft tissue on my body. I called my doctor and expressed my concern over what I thought was a rash. He said he didn't think it was from the medication, I stopped taking it against his advice. [NOTE: I don't recommend doing this ever] I saw him two weeks later, showed him photos of the bleeding and he essentially thanked me for stopping the meds.

So those of you with acid reflux, beware; it will affect how the medication will work/affect you - and possibly to my extent, which was poisoning. I may have permanent kidney and liver damage.

What an awful thing - I'm so sorry you had this happen to you!

How does the acid reflux figure into it?

I take Epival, have been as high as 1500 mg with bad cognitive problems, then holding at 750 for 2 yrs. I do get a lot of heartburn, but I don't think it's acid reflux. sometimes I wonder if the Epival has anything to do with it.

My son is taking 1200 mg Lithium (5 yrs now) and has heartburn problems. He was told that it was not likely to be caused by the Lithium. I looked everywhere on the net that I could and didn't find a heartburn or acid reflux side effect with it.

So I'm wondering.....

I know that you shouldn't take it if you have GI tract problems (like acid relfux) mine is pretty severe. I don't know if it can cause acid reflux though. I had extreme "cognitive dulling" with Epival as well. Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux. Diagnosing acid reflux is very hit and miss apparently; I've had it since birth and has cause me serious problems. They didn't figure out what it was until I was about 12, I just seemed to be vomiting blood for no reason? They just said it was from stress.

Either way; I think you should find out whats causing the heartburn (be it meds, diet, reflux, etc) because it may affect how your medication affects you (if its acid reflux) whether your doctor is aware of it or not.
