Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental illness. It affects men and women with equal frequency. People suffering from schizophrenia may have the following symptoms:
Delusions, false personal beliefs held with conviction in spite of reason or evidence to the contrary, not explained by that person's cultural context.
Hallucinations, perceptions that occur in the absence of an actual external stimulus.
Disorganized thoughts and behaviore
Disorganized speech
Catatonic behavior, in which the affected person's body may be rigid and the person may be unresponsive

The term schizophrenia is Greek in origin, and in the Greek meant "split mind." This is not an accurate medical term. Im Western culture, some people have come to believe that it refers to a split-personality disorder. These are two very different disorders, and people with schizophrenis do not have seperate personalities.

Schizophrenis and other mental health disorders have fairly strict criteria for diagnosis. Time of onset as well as length and characteristics of symptoms are all factors. The active symptoms of schizlophrenia must be present at least 6 months, on only 1 month if treated.

Mooky I hope that helps!

A person with schizotypal personality disorder has odd behaviors and thoughts that would typically be viewed by others as eccentric, erratic, and bizarre. They are known on occasion to have brief periods of psychotic episodes. Their speech, while coherent, is marked by a focus on trivial detail. Thought processes of schizotypals include magical thinking, suspiciousness, and illusions. These thought patterns are believed to be the schizotypal's unconscious way of coping with social anxiety. To some extent, these behaviors stem from being socially isolated and having a distorted view of appropriate interpersonal relations.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a professional manual, specifies nine diagnostic criteria for schizotypal personality disorder:

* Incorrect interpretations of events. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder often have difficulty seeing the correct cause and effect of situations and how they affect others. For instance, the schizotypal may misread a simple non-verbal communication cue, such as a frown, as someone being displeased with them, when in reality it may have nothing to do with them. Their perceptions are often distortions of what is really happening externally, but they tend to believe their perceptions more than what others might say or do.

* Odd beliefs or magical thinking. These individuals may be superstitious or preoccupied with the paranormal. They often engage in these behaviors as a desperate means to find some emotional connection with the world they live in. This behavior is seen as a coping mechanism to add meaning in a world devoid of much meaning because of the social isolation these individuals experience.

* Unusual perceptual experiences. These might include having illusions, or attributing a particular event to some mysterious force or person who is not present. Affected people may also feel they have special powers to influence events or predict an event before it happens.

* Odd thinking and speech. People with schizotypal personality disorder may have speech patterns that appear strange in their structure and phrasing. Their ideas are often loosely associated, prone to tangents, or vague in description. Some may verbalize responses by being overly concrete or abstract and insert words that serve to confuse rather than clarify a particular situation, yet make sense to them. They are typically unable to have ongoing conversation and tend to talk only about matters that need immediate attention.

* Suspicious or paranoid thoughts. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder are often suspicious of others and display paranoid tendencies.

* Emotionally inexpressive. Their general social demeanor is to appear aloof and isolated, behaving in a way that communicates they derive little joy from life. Most have an intense fear of being humiliated or rejected, yet repress most of these feelings for protective reasons.

* Eccentric behavior. People with schizotypal personality disorder are often viewed as odd or eccentric due to their unusual mannerisms or unconventional clothing choices. Their personal appearance may look unkempt—clothing choices that do not "fit together," clothes may be too small or large, or clothes may be noticeably unclean.

* Lack of close friends. Because they lack the skills and confidence to develop meaningful interpersonal relationships, they prefer privacy and isolation. As they withdraw from relationships, they increasingly turn inward to avoid possible social rejection or ridicule. If they do have any ongoing social contact, it is usually restricted to immediate family members.

* Socially anxious. Schizotypals are noticeably anxious in social situations, especially with those they are not familiar with. They can interact with people when necessary, but prefer to avoid as much interaction as possible because their self-perception is that they do not "fit in." Even when exposed to the same group of people over time, their social anxiety does not seem to lessen. In fact, it may progress into distorted perceptions of paranoia involving the people with whom they are in social contact.

I was diagnosed as Schizotypal, but I do not have all of the symptoms. I AM able to form close friendships - I've never had that problem. But I do have magical thinking, I do get paranoid and suspicious, and some other symptoms. It's not my major diagnosis. My T is helping me with this. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for that in depth reply Bronxgirl.
I feel like I understand Schizotypal personality at least in the general sense.
As I was reading your reply I was thinking of a woman I met as an in patient last year.
I think I understand her much better now too.
It sounds like a very tough disorder to live with.
I'm so glad that you are okay with making close friends.
They can make all the difference sometimes.
Take care.

Schizotypal is not my main diagnosis. I think I mainly have some features of it. I never heard of it until my current T told me about it. I know I have messed-up thinking, but I don't have the social problems. I have lots of friends and I'm very able to get close to people. As I said, I only have a few features of it. I'm lucky!

I'm Bipolar 1 and I have a terrible time keeping friends. I meet people okay. I'm open and seem friendly but then I go a bit manic and push them away because I get too needy or tell them absolutely everything about myself. Either that or I get a bit depressive and the littlest thing they say hurts my feelings and I dump them.
I really am a friendly kind of person it's just hard to show it sometimes.
I also live just across the street from the middle of nowhere and only have one hermit as a neighbor so this sight and a few computer online games are just about all my human contact, besides my family.
With any luck we will be moving next year to an actual town where I can meet new people and try again to keep friends.

Hello Bronxgirl and anyone else who responds:

Here's all I've got right now. I am so depressed it's all I could manage to get out:
feeling very lonely, miss Rudy and wondering if I should let him back into my life - thinking about the times he was really mean to me
disappointed with my friend BJ who I have lost respect for after last visit
loss of relationship with sister
scared about upcoming surgery and who is going to care for me
worried about my disability, the Chronic pain I endure every day, will my feet and legs heal
wonder if there is a future for me
feel like i missed out on the opportunity to create my own family at 44 now and disabled

I am again going to try and get some sleep, it's 2:38 a.m. - that's early for me. I am not here to drain everyone - there are days when I can contribute but today this is all I've got. Yes, I do have a psychologist but he is very busy and I see him only once every two weeks. Either way it is hard for me to get to him because I don't have a w/c lift for my car yet. I miss living.

Current medications as of 06-01-2009
06-01-2002 - Present: oxycodone, 5 mg. 3-4 times day
02-08-2003 - Present: neurontin, 600mg. 3-4 times day
06-01-2009 - Present: ativan, 1 mg. 2 times day
06-01-2009 - Present: naproxen sodium, 500mg. once a month during menses 3-4 times day
