Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I am afraid to get out of bed. Unless I have definite plans, I feel somewhat overwhelmed and don't know what to do with my time. Maybe I need to set up some sort of "plan" on what I will do those days that I DON'T have plans. Any thoughts?

I call it feeling whelmed (from overwhelmed) and sometimes I feel that way too. Things I have found helpful--and they also help for sleep: keep the bedroom for sleeping only--no TV, this gives you boredom as an incentive. Plans for the day are good if you are a list-making person draw them up the night before. Even if you decide to do something else they'll get you out of the bed.

The other thing I think is helpful is to break everything down into small pieces.
For instance its not get out of the bed, its put one foot out of the bed, sit up, put other foot out---etc. It sounds silly but it helps if you are not doing one huge thing just lots of little things. Have a reward, like once you are out of bed give yourself your morning beverage of choice and a quiet time. I like to sit in my dressing gown with coffee and watch my cats play. I am bad tho--I drink coffee. THEN after you are used to being awake and aware that you are in your own home, get dressed and get breakfast.

If you don't have to go to work and you have something you really like doing, like I like watching craft shows, do that next. Just keep moving and dividing everything into little bits. Take breaks and give yourself rewards too.

It sounds silly, but this has kept me going. I hope it helps you.

Thanks Lizbeth! That is wonderful. I will definitely put your ideas into use. I just sometimes get so SCARED to get out of bed. It seems silly, I know. I've been on the computer all morning, and it's almost 3:00 and all I've done is run the dishwasher. I think I'll do some laundry and clean my floors. I have to get moving! Thank you!!!!

I have the same problem. Sometimes I get so depressed its pretty impossible to even get the incentive to put one foot out of the bed. I feel like, even if I have something really important to, its still not good enough. I am going through this right now as a matter of fact. I sleep until 4pm or later and finally think, well I have to get up at some point. The only thing that gets me out of bed is my fiance. He's so supportive, but sometimes I just want to yell at him to leave me alone... because sometimes getting out of bed seems worse than staying in bed all day.

Meghan - are you depressed? Have you seen your doctor lately? It's wonderful that you have a fiance who's so supportive!

Even when I'm not depressed I still have trouble getting out of bed. Maybe I'm slightly depressed and don't know it? The weekends are better because my husband gets me up.

I am depressed. I see my doctor on the 6th, I just saw him on the 28th. He keeps tweaking my medications. I'm irritable, sad, I cry for silly reasons, I know I'm depressed. The only time I don't have trouble getting out of bed is when I'm manic, when I'm manic I can't get myself into bed.
