I guys, so I understand that you have to be diagnosed by a professional to get meds for depression, but the thing is that I don't think I'm ready yet to tell people how I feel, I get really nervous around people and it stops me from sharing my emotions, I just freeze and I find it hard to open up, I've been feeling down and antisocial these past few years and I am wanting to know if there are any meds out there which I could by possibly in a drug store in the UK, I am only 17 and am at a boarding school, so I just want something which will help me to stop feeling so empty all the time and like a waste of space. Thanks.

Melmel,

First thing I love your name. It's hard when you feel alone and maybe just want to disappear into a hole. I really don't think there is anything available over the counter. Going to a doctor is really worth it. Once I did that and got on the correct medication I felt so much better. You say you freeze and can't open up to people, what if you kept a journal and brought it to your doctor.

I really hope this helps in some way

Hi Melmel,

There are various options for over the counter, however, its hard to self treat using over the counter when supplements and herbs are difficult to self navigate. I had a very difficult time myself when finding the right medication. It took me 5 years to find a combination that "sort of helped...a little bit". I had a lot of side effects but the relief I felt was still worth the side effects. I finally decided to look into alternatives. After feeling overwhelmed with all the stuff thats out there from St.Johns to B complex vitamins, I decided to ask a doctor. Scared that they might get upset, the doctor helped me understand an important lesson. Depression sucks in that medications for the condition affect everyone differently, and due to the side effects, it is YOU who determines if the pros outweigh the cons for consumption. HOWEVER, IT IS ALSO A CONDITION OF THE MIND. Therefore, lifestyle changes can provide relief and healing without the need of such high doses or a lot of various psych meds. For example, eating a pancake at a local diner at 8 pm every Thursday and listening to your favorite music as you eat it might make it better. Learning to massage or stretch, seeing photos of friends etc. What helped me was to write little notes and sometimes letters to friends I cared for and send them via USPS. I don't always divulge into my illness, I can if I want. But I write jokes, send pictures of my past or current photo albums, and an appreciation for them being who they are. They write back too when they can. Hope this helps :D

I would like to add that my medication was adjusted 5 years later after talking with my doctor, and now I feel way better. New psych meds came into the market, and I am happy that I had to go through such a long wait as well as take the previous meds that didn't quite help as much. It is a learning experience and gives me hope of more progress in behavioral health treatment.

I can't afford a Dr. so I've been trying out different things. Life changes day to day, but making happy routines, help. I take herbal supplements and it helps. I take St. Johns, lemon balm tincture, corormega, and Reliv products. It helps. I'm still struggling, but every day I breath I thank God I am still alive with my family.

I was so against western meds for decades, that I tried about everything on the market. For me, the most helpful was 5-HTP. You can get it online and will notice if it's working within a few days. There's also St. John's Wort, SAM-E, Chinese herbs, and a million different formulas combining different things. One company I've had good luck with is Natural Balance. I take their "Happy sleeper" formula, so I'm sure that their "Happy Camper" one would be good as well. I haven't tried is since you shouldn't take too many serotonin boosters at once. Serotonin syndrome is a real thing. But if you aren't on prescription meds, you'll be fine to experiment. Don't take more than 300 mg of 5-HTP per day, and late afternoon or before bed works best. Start with less though to see if you have any adverse effects.

I'm sorry you feel empty and like a waste of space. That's a horrible way to feel, especially long term. I also get nervous around people, but have found such relief with my meds, after 25 years of untreated bipolar II. If I could go back to when I was 17, I'd do things differently. We're all on our own path in life though. Good luck finding your next step.

You could get a SAD lamp and see if that helps. I have SAD but did not know it until two years ago and I'm 32 years old. Carex is the brand I bought and you can get it from Amazon for $150. It needs to be large and to be on legs so it shines down on your eyes to stimulate melatonin production. You will need to use it every day for 30 minutes in the morning. Changed my life.

My friend majored in psychology and she told me they said in the first class that St. Johns Wart is a rip off and does not work.
