Hi Melmel,
There are various options for over the counter, however, its hard to self treat using over the counter when supplements and herbs are difficult to self navigate. I had a very difficult time myself when finding the right medication. It took me 5 years to find a combination that "sort of helped...a little bit". I had a lot of side effects but the relief I felt was still worth the side effects. I finally decided to look into alternatives. After feeling overwhelmed with all the stuff thats out there from St.Johns to B complex vitamins, I decided to ask a doctor. Scared that they might get upset, the doctor helped me understand an important lesson. Depression sucks in that medications for the condition affect everyone differently, and due to the side effects, it is YOU who determines if the pros outweigh the cons for consumption. HOWEVER, IT IS ALSO A CONDITION OF THE MIND. Therefore, lifestyle changes can provide relief and healing without the need of such high doses or a lot of various psych meds. For example, eating a pancake at a local diner at 8 pm every Thursday and listening to your favorite music as you eat it might make it better. Learning to massage or stretch, seeing photos of friends etc. What helped me was to write little notes and sometimes letters to friends I cared for and send them via USPS. I don't always divulge into my illness, I can if I want. But I write jokes, send pictures of my past or current photo albums, and an appreciation for them being who they are. They write back too when they can. Hope this helps :D
I would like to add that my medication was adjusted 5 years later after talking with my doctor, and now I feel way better. New psych meds came into the market, and I am happy that I had to go through such a long wait as well as take the previous meds that didn't quite help as much. It is a learning experience and gives me hope of more progress in behavioral health treatment.
