I have started incorporating omega 3 into my diet. It has been so easy to do. I love mik, butter, smoked salmon and tuna. So I simply drink milk fortified with omega 3, and the same with butter. Any cold water fish is rich in omega 3. Plus nowadays so many other foods have omega 3 added. It seems to be a trend. I notice a lot of products in the grocery that have omega 3 added, so it isn't difficult to add this into your diet.

As far as noticing any results, it's hard to say. Around the time that I started taking antidepressants is the time when I started to take omega 3. My depression has decreased at any rate, but is not completely gone.

There is a lot of research that recommends, especially people with mental illnesses, to consume more omega 3. I researched it on the internet which is how I came to start adding more to my diet

09-24-2010 - Present:Wellbutrin, 150 mg. Once per day

Tiger, Thanks for reminding me as to the importance of fish oil. I agree that Omega 3, 6, 9 are all very important. I guess most of us get enough Omega 6 and 9 from our western diet, but Omega 3 is hard to get unless you eat a lot of fish. I began taking fish oil capsules (1200 mg, has 720mg omega3) about 3 yrs. ago. I began taking it on advice of my dietitian to help lower my cholesterol. It has helped control my cholesterol and I have have had no serious depression during this same time. Coincidence? Hard to say. Before taking the fish oil I was experiencing depression, occasionally. I should probably try to get a little more in my diet, as 1000mg Omega 3 is the amount recommended to me by dietitian. I also take a multivitamin mineral supplement each day. Getting enough B vitamins is also very important for everyone, but especially for us with mental health issues.

omega 3's are more important than omega 6 and 9. if you get too many omega 6 and 9's you will cause a severe imbalance within your system, and its easy to do with common western diets. peanut oils are high in omega 6's. i read from a site that people with bi-polar disorder should take anywhere from 4 to 10 grams of omega 3 supplements a day, the higher the dosage the better. im gonna start off slowly upping my personal dosage to see what works best for me!

I researched Omega 3's intensely and herbs to help. I went off psych drugs l6 months ago and have not had a clinical depression or suicidality since then! I take 3 Grams of Omega 3's a day, plus St. John's Wort for depression 600 mg twice a day (warning: do not take antidepressants alone-- they trigger mania/hypomania), I also take Valerian Root 1060 mg twice a day for anxiety, that is what helps 'tamp' down the antidepressant (St. John's Wort) and prevents the mania, and Melatonin 3 mg for sleep. There is one thing, Stress triggers my episodes. Unfortunately, I have experienced severe stress since Jan. 16 and am now dealing with hypomania for a week (very little sleep, super anxious) then calm a week then MIXED now. I have adjusted the meds accordingly. But I must admit, I am a bit worried. Still, I made it for l6 months!! I usually would have 3 clinical depressions a year for 2 - 3 months and generally dysthymic. Then I was suicidal and hospitalized 5 times on meds. Also have a heart condition and am permanently on a beta blocker bc of effexor.

Good for you! I've been taking Omega 3 for years. It's when I think it isn't doing anything so I cut back that I realize how much it helps. I've found that 4g per day in the afternoon works best for me. If I take it after 2pm it interferes with my sleep. It would be best to take with breakfast but I take so many other things in the morning that I do it at lunch for convienence.

K

(Psalm 94:19) . . .When my disquieting thoughts became many inside of me, Your own consolations began to fondle my soul.
