i went to a health food store yesterday to try to see about a diet change to help bipolar. I have Mirena IUD ihave had it for more then two years. The guy over there said he believes I am getting worse because of the IUD> wouldnt i have had signs long before now? Also he said it comes from having too mcuh yeast in your system, I thought bipolar was a chemical imbalance in the brain. I left the place more confused than ever. basically he told me my meds were doing me no good. anyinput is greatly appreciated. thanks, oh he also said that this disorderis actually a symptom, not a disease. i thought it was a disease with symptoms/triggers.

I agree that presription meds treat symptoms and do not look for the MANY causes of mood disorders. GABA has been one of the most important features of my health plan. I was one of the 75% for whom prescription meds were not sufficient and for me they were nearly deadly. The more natural route takes a lot of time, effort and determination but it is worth it. It has taken me over 1000 hours of research and 18 months of trial and error to achieve a stable life.

I recommend reading the book Healing Depression and Bipolar Disorder Without Drugs. It may overwhelm you to see all the possible causes of your own issues. I have already learned most of what I'm reading and it still overwhelms me a bit.

Our diets is a good although very difficult place to start. I only finally committed to a 75% organic gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free diet 2 weeks ago although I have been working towards the goal for years. Just 3 days into it I began to feel much better and the cravings are about gone.

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too much yeast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bollocks!!!!!!!!!!! excuse my language! it is unclear what precisely causes bp, but it is taken as a given that it is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain as many drugs treating the symptoms activate chemicals in brain. if it was as simple as yeast then we would have had a cure or sure fire treatment already!!!!!!
also there is huge amt of evidence that certain bp can be inherited - and a lot of reasearch is being done in this area......so if its genetic its a disorder.....with symptoms.
i have come across many people who like hoosier above with great willpower have seen the benefit of the holistic approach, but be careful research well furst and always do under supervision!!!!!!
Good luck!
