Ok, this is my first post here, but it's a serious question. Can exercising too much in one day cause problems for people with Bipolar disorder? Last week I went for a long walk (3 hours) and the only problem I had was a blister on my toe (which i solved using toe spacers for corns). The next day, i spent 20 min using resistance machines at the Y as well as 20 min on an elliptical and actually felt worse afterwords. I read somewhere that too much exercise can cause a problem by increasing certain chemicals in the brain, but i was just wondering if anyone had actually experienced this?

Yes, as with all things, moderation is the key. When I'm hypomanic, my brain does not recieve the usual pain signals from the body that say, "I've had enough now, please stop!" When my brain keeps pushing my body, eventually my body just goes on strike. So when you're at baseline, determine what is a reasonable amount of exercise for you and don't let yourself go beyond those limits or you will eventually pay for it.

It's important that you don't start with too much, because the body can't handle that.. if you do gradely a bit more and more, it's okay. of course you should be reasonable, but if you dont gym until you dont have energy left, it's okay.. But as HoosierK says it's at least for me very hard when I'm hypomanic, because I can gym hard for like 4 hours then. Anyway I usually gym pretty much, and I have no problems with gymming 5- 6 times a week because I started increase it gradely. Always stop when you feel very tired, or dont gym if you feel very tired before you start (unless it's the first time you gym, and you only did with low intensity five minutes ;)) Anyway, all bodies replys different on excercise, so you need to combine your bodies reactions with knowledge and logic sense.

I hope you figured this out :)
