I have to exercise for my mental health. I had a serious fall while playing tennis a year ago and I am slowly still healing. I am doing some water aerobics, hired a personal trainer for a few sessions for specific issues like shoulder pain to get me back to the gym. Do yoga as well. I am 55 next week and these will be exercises for life. My trainer intends to teach me some balance work. I wonder if anyone has experienced balance issues from meds. I think my ultimate goal would be to play tennis again. I am not willing to fall again, pain meds and SAD at the same time last winter was brutal.

Current medications as of 09-12-2010
08-11-2010 - Present: Ambien, 10 mlgm. nightly
08-11-2010 - Present: Buproprion, 150 miligrams. Twice a day + 37.mlgms in am dose
08-11-2010 - Present: Lamictal, 100 mg. twice daily
08-11-2010 - Present: Lithium, 100 milg. Twice a day + 37.mlgms in am dose

Hi KR,

This topic hits home for me except I thought you were talking about life in general not equilibrium! I like to go crazy w/working out like w/intent to cause pain: just like some people cut themselves, I will hurt myself physically. I'm having a difficult time w/taking it slowly.

Its true w/a lot of things in my life that unless I can go "all out", I tend not to go at all. We all know procrastination is a 5syllable word for fear...I'm 43 & need to learn how to have balance in all of the areas that make up my life - especially sleep. By far the worst/what needs the most work. I just started an Associate in Science program & am already putting things off.

They are mostly learned behaviors that are so ingrained I often don't even realize that I'm doing them. Its possible the behaviors are rooted in a deep down fear that my efforts will never be good enough...I'm not sure. I played the scapegoat in a dysfunctional family that hid the dysfunction by my parents having successful careers as doctors. To top it off, out of my 3biological sisters 2 are docs & one is a hospitalist.

It would be growth for me to be able to learn how to have balance & actually be OK w/it. I am a human being after all...Although I have become really buff from working out so hard in the past. My joints have taken to much stress & I need to lose weight - I'm 5'6" & 230lbs. When I got here to Utah I was 180pounds about 8months ago! My body fat is not very high& the docs say despite the weight gain I'm in good health.

My friend Vini from Oklahoma says "If you don't plan, plan to fail". SO after I finish my homework I am going to do my best to make a schedule. I hate sticking to a regimen BUT when I do I seem to do really well.

Oh well I guess I went off subject.

Hm,, If you mean physical balance I must say that mine is TERRIBLE too.. I didnt even consider that it has anything with medications to do - well. I only take Lamictal. Still I do gym a lot every week, and I think I should from the circumstances of what I gym have better balance.

When I do something new, chrisboynton, I often feel stupid because I'm newbie and dont have control etc. What I often do is doing it hard to show myself I can early, and that makes me feel safe with it so I can do it in normal (or almost normal) hard. Like when I started swimming - I did swum and swum until I reached 5000 meters (I used some weeks to get strong enough for that one), and after that I knew I CAN swim that far if I want to, so I dont need to prove it to myself or others anymore, and I feel okay swimming there even though the others are faster than me and have cooler teqniques :P

If you are having problems with balance, you should see a physical therapist. They are the the movement specialists and have great information to improve balance, bone density, strength, and overall wellness. There are exercises you can do at home to help with balance, and it is fun to do. If you don't know a physical therapist in your area, you can go to www.apta.org and find a therapist. I know I got better when I did.
