StefaniMari: Hey, new meds are scarey, i know. I was on antidepressants for about 10 years and now we (my Pdoc and I) have figured out I have Bipolar2 so we are changing all my meds. I am now off of SSRI antidepressants for the first time in ten years(see me worry, worry, worry) so I know what its like.

It sounds like your pdoc will be using depakote (not sure of spelling either) as a mood stabilizer for you, Its generic name is valproate which is a bit easier to spell anyway. They may have to check blood levels to keep it in a therapeutic range for you but that is a simple lab test. Some people think it also has some antidepressant effects too. It might help you sleep better.
It has been around a long time, at first it was used as an antiseizure med.

As long as you keep all your pdoc appointments and have any bloodwork done that is ordered for you, I don't think it will cause big problems. Everyone is different tho, so keep your doctor updated on how you are doing with the med once you start it.

They are starting me on a different mood stabilizer so I am having to tell myself almost all the same things I just told you. I wish us both luck, let us know how it works out. Be sure to give it time, sometimes it takes a while to get any help from a med. Your pharmacist is also a good person to ask if you have questions once you pick up your pills.

StefaniMarie,

First of all... welcome to the forum. Glad to see you here!!

Lizabeth is a really smart lady... she has lots of good stuff to say. So, I'm glad that she piped in here. And she's right.... adding/changing meds can be quite scary. One of the things that I do to help with my fears is to "geek out." I try to do as much research as I possibly can about the change/addition that I am about to agree to.

So, go to credible sites about medications like WebMD or rxlist.com to learn about the medication. Be careful about random sites that may or may not have accurate information.

I wish you the best as your doc tries to get the right mix of medications for you. It takes a while. It's frustrating and its scary. We just want to feel better, so we want to get on with it already!

Take care and be well,
Jules

I took depakote fro quite awhile and it literally saved my life it was that good. After years and years I decided I didn't want to gain weight anymore, but then when I tried to go back to it ebcause it worked so well, it did not seem to work as well anymore, which isweird. But I guess we all are different and can change some as we get older. But I wholeheartedly recommend it as for it helping bipolar symptoms, but the weight gain sucked.

Current medications as of 03-13-2009
03-02-2009 - Present: Lamictal, 300 mg. p.m.
03-13-2009 - Present: Geodon, 80 mg. a.m.
03-13-2009 - Present: Wellbutrin, 450 mg. a.m.
03-14-2009 - Present: Abilify, 10 mg. a.m.

I have always used Depakote and then Depakote ER as my stabilizer and it has been a life saver. Since I also take Adderall, it counteracts the majority of the weight gain effects that most people have seen.
The one period I went off of it required a higher dose to establish the same effect when I started taking it again.
