does seroquel promotes weight gain? How about Tegretol?

I thinking about asking my doctor about adding seroquel to my coquetel, I'm currently on lexapro and tompamax and I dont want to increase the tompamax because of the stupids and I having a hard time controlling my moods and sleeping. Seroquel is NOT a weight-neutral medication. That is, it is known to cause weight gain. When my physician put me on 300mg for sleep and mood stabilization, he told me expected me to gain about 10 pounds per year. THAT was completely UNACCEPTABLE. That is the reason I am on Topamax, to balance out weight effects of the Seroquel. So far, it has worked.

Seroquel is a major tranquilizer and an atypical anti-psychotic medication. It has a completely different function than Tegretol. Tegretol is an anti-seizure medication. Tegretol is less likely to cause weight gain.

Seroquel is the best for sleep because it is a tranquilizer. It does have mood stabilizing properties, however mostly for depressive symptoms, not so much for manic or hypomanic symptoms. Tegretol is an excellent mood stabilizer. It can help with sleep simply because it can help with mood. But, it doesn't "cause" sleep like Seroquel does.

Seroquel is actually a pretty miraculous medication for those it works for. At the 25mg or 50mg level, it can be used as a daytime anti-anxiety agent. At higher levels it can help with sleep. At 300mg and at 600 mg, it has been shown to help bipolar depression. So, it a very versatile medication. That's one of the reasons its worth fighting the weight issues to be able to take it, for me.

I wish you the best!

Be well,
Jules

Kef, unfortunately, I'm not real sensitive to any medication. I tend to have a high tolerance to whatever I'm given. I would guess that is from my history as an addict.... if one is good, more is better. I put so much junk in my body as a twenty-something, it's unbelievable. My brain simply develops tolerance very quickly. It is a key trait of an addict.

Seroquel does not increase my appetite. It tends to have a metabolic effect on me. It makes it harder for me to burn calories, therefore my body stores more calories as fat. (oh goody, goody!) However, it is the miracle medication for me as far as sleep is concerned. God knows that I went through every freakin' other possibility to put me to sleep before we got to Seroquel with very little results. If I take 200mg of Seroquel, there is NO way that I am going to be conscious in an hour... or even in 30 minutes.

Cristy.... let me tell you something about sleep medication and memory. This is VERY important. Once sleep medication begins to engage and a person starts to feel "high" or "woozy," something happens in the brain with its ability to lay down new memories. It is almost like an alcoholic blackout, where the person is walking/talking (or dancing on tables) and doesn't remember it the next day.

The brain's memory making function literally shuts down. I can have an ENTIRE conversation with my husband after I take my meds and not remember a WORD of it the next day. It is not because I don't want to.... it is because the memory is simply NOT there. It cannot be retrieved because it was NEVER etched into my brain in the first place.

It doesn't happen that way every single time... but it happens that way most of the time to most people. That is why it is so important to take sleep medication and then GO TO BED. You don't take your sleep medication and then plan to do stuff for a couple hours before you go to bed. I just wanted to let you know about that, because you mentioned it as "weird" with your boyfriend. Even though it feels weird, It is not weird. It is exactly normal. Y'all just need to learn to reshape your lives around your new reality.

Be well,
Jules

I just came back from my pdoc, she put on seroquel 25mg before I go to bed and increase to 50mg after a couple weeks if 25mg its not enough, since I also taking topamax I don't think it's going to make me very hungry, shealso increased my topamax to 75mg. She also wants to gave me 2 weeks of medical leave and she wantsme to go somewhere stable, to see my mom or to a hospital because she said I need stability for my meds to kick in or I will have a nervous break down the way I have been going. She said I look terrible and so tired today and she is very worried about me she also adviced me to do therapy because its very clear that my enviroment its making my situation much worst. I had a similiar situation with ambien, I had one of my good friends spent the night with my ex husnad was away on a business trip and in the middle of the night I though she was him and I tried to hug and cudddle a with her and even kiss her and I got mad when she didnt return my kis!! ahahahah

My doctor didnt tell me that it makes you gain weight! i take 100mg of seroquel at night, and ive lost weight.I will definitely ask about that. Im sorry to say this but i think you should know, i used to pop topamax and my point of telling you this is that it can make you lose an average of 18 IQ points over a long period. My doctor and therapist refer to it as stupamax. it can also cause kidney and liver problems. You might want to talk to your doctor about it.

I've been on Seroquel for a few years now. I find it extremely effective in controllilng my mood throughout the day. In my previous (high-stress) job, I was taking a small dose every 45 minutes or so from 830am through to 5pm. Now it's only 3 doses between 12.30pm and 6.30pm. However, like others, I find the sedating effect to be a great issue - 12.5 mg during the day will have me asleep at my desk. I just looooove cutting those little orange tablets into a squillion quarters each week! That means any increased dose needs to be added in at night - currently 225mg. I'm out like a light within an hour, max. I am totally incoherent and unable to stand upright if I push it! As for weight gain? I'm on such a cocktail, I couldn't tell what was causing anything unless one thing is changed at a time. I don't have metabolic disorder, but I simply cannot lose weight. On the other hand, I'm not really gaining weight either.
