I think not drinking coffee past 3pm is the key for me. I have a lot of trouble sleeping. I take a sleeping medication but I also find several other things help if I follow them (I don't always though):
1. Listen to soothing music when you get in bed.
2. Turn off the computer about 1/2 hour before going to bed.
3. If you watch tv avoid upsetting news shows, horror movies or other things that might stimulate instead of sooth you. I find watching old reruns of sitcoms chill me out because, while funny, I can almost quote them word for word and the predictability of it comforts me.
4. Pray.
5. Take a shower or warm bath.
6. Use any combination of these or others but have a ritual.
Hope these help.
