I'm a wreck most of the time, but in my inspired moments I put my energy to use creating in various media. I am now listening to a piano composition posted in a previous thread and it is inspiring me. Thank you Bipolar 123. I find that when I'm depressed music is a great thing, to either play or to listen to. Even when I'm depressed, as I am right now, I can still find solace in music. Even when I have writer's block (as I do now) I can still sit down and jam. It lifts me up a little bit, at least for a little while.
I used to play trumpet in high school, though I stopped after 2 years. I played a little guitar on an off these past few years, but my real musical passion is for drums, and not the western kind. I started with djembe a few years ago, and about a year ago branched out into the traditions of Tabla (north indian classical music) and I must say I'm hooked. It took a lot of different instruments, but now I know for sure that Tabla will always be a huge part of my life. It started last march when I met my Tabla teacher, who is the leader of a local ensemble of musicians who are his students, who he directs in a large band. He's been quite successful, playing with the Tea Party, and he definitely sees me as a talent to cultivate. He let me design lighting for his show in a 450 seat theatre last May. He is also a bit harsh about my mental illness, but he comes from a part of the world where death is a daily sight, so he is used to being depressed, and works within a harsh, strict code of self-discipline to get through life. He's the best thing that has ever happened to me. I've been closely following his instruction for the past 10 months. Very inspiring, and very difficult work. I hope someday I can be successful with it, though even five years from now, I'll just be beginning.
In India, many people both Hindu and secular consider Tabla to be a spiritual instrument. I'm inclined to reject organized religion, but I definitely feel like creativity is the ultimate spiritual act. I don't understand why (nor want to), and I leave it at that, and that works for me.
One of my teacher's teachers, incidentally, is considered by many to be the best player currently alive. Just listening to his music lifts my soul.
