I've suffered from severe, recurrent major depression for 25 years. Medications and psychotherapy have only been partially beneficial. FINALLY I was given the opportunity to receive ECT. After everything I've read about the high success rate, I was more than ready to give it a try. I had to stay out of work between 3-4 months and have my father come stay to help me, but I am much, much better. I had 12 treatments in close succession, and have received them in longer intervals since then. Yesterday I had #16. We plan to do one more in a month and stop. I cannot begin to imagine why this treatment is not offered more often. There is little risk and it is very effective, so it should not be reserved for special cases. Despite what some people think, it is not painful or humiliating in anyway. I had mine done on an outpatient basis. The only real problem was memory loss, and that has continued to improve as time goes by. I am so grateful to have had this treatment :)

How could you afford to be out of work for 3-4 months? I haven't had any success with therapy or drugs and knew this treatment was an option, but it seems like it temporarily leaves you a bit debilitated. I can't afford to miss more than a week of work; are there any options that would work for those of us in financial strain? I imagine this is a very expensive procedure that probably isn't covered by a lot of insurance plans.

The memory loss part scares me a lot, too. I feel like I can't remember things well enough as it is, so I'm worried if I got the treatment, I'd drop the ball with everything.

I'm very curious to hear more about your treatment.

I am also interested in hearing more. As a woman of 56 years old, I already notice a slight memory loss. I would be afraid to do anything that would further impair my memory. I also wanted to learn why you had to have someone stay with you. Were you not fuly functional after these sessions? Also is this treatment covered under the Canadian OHIP plan and if not, how much are each of these sessions? Thank you.
