Borderline Personality Disorder is defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health disorders as a pervasive pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self image, and affects, and marked impusivity beginning by early adulthood. Most often it is caused by some form of trauma, ie. sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse. It is often also diagnosed along with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. BPD often includes a marked and persistently unstable self-image, or sense of self. I hope this is helpful to you. One of the most effective forms of treatment for a diagnosis of BPD is one created by Marsha Linehan called DBT or dialectical behavioral therapy. It includes skills training on four key areas. Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, and Distress Tolerance, or as Marsha Linehan refers to it as Crisis Survival Skills. Best wishes to you as you find your road to recovery.

DBT is a very strong treatment. I was in a DBT group a few years ago and it helped alot. Thing is I seem to have taken some back steps myself and my life has been complicated recently by the introduction of my natural family. I was adopted and only met my natural family less then 2 monthes ago. So I will be starting in another DBT group again so I don't fall back on bad habits. I have serious problems with Emotional Regulation and Distress Tolerance. I want to work on those again with other people who can relate to the problems I have to deal with. If you can find a group or at least a therapist that works with DBT.
