I was recently diagnosed with BPD and have previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (type II), rapid cycling, with cluster B personality features and generalized anxiety disorder - yep, I'm just a little crazy.

I had a full on breakdown on Monday and have been having suicidal thoughts on and off since. My family knows and is very supportive.

My major problem is... I've been cycling like crazy. I mean, one hour of the day I'm hypo-manic, and it changes without notice to me crying hysterically and wanting to kill myself. And it's been happening, like, 5-10 times a day.

I simply can't handle it. I feel completely crazy. Does anyone have any tips on slowing the cycles?

Hi cassandrab.

I think you are rapid cycling because you just found out you are "just a little bit crazy." You are not that. You just have a few obstacles which, over time, you can overcome with therapy and a drug regimen that you and you pdoc will find. I have every confidence you will.

Remember to print this data off every single time you go to you pdoc appointments. They are accurate in telling him/her what is going on with you.

As for the suicidal feelings. Don't let them go unreported. Talk to your pdoc during the day and a suicide hotline if it happens in the middle of the night. I live alone and I have a "warm line" programmed into my phone. It's for when I'm manic and not suicidal. I also have a hotline for when I am suicidal.

I sense you are a little ashamed of rapid cycling. Don't be. It is very common for where you are right now. The key is to disclose this to your psych provider.

Hang in there and let us know where you are soon.

Cassandra, Terri's suggestions above are very good.

I've been a rapid cycler too, and I understand that it's very painful and disconcerting. I've been taking quetiapine and it's the only medication that has helped me most recently. If you haven't tried it, you might ask your doctor about it. On low doses it helps with sleep and on higher doses it helps with moods and "craziness."

I, too, used to call Samaritans daily. I used to consider suicide daily. Not so much most recently.

I find that getting sufficient sleep helps me a lot, but your mood chart seems to say that you usually get sufficient sleep but frequently sleep A LOT, like because of depression. Or maybe that's because of the Trazadone. I used to sleep a lot when I took Trazadone (but it helped me enough to be quite worth it).

Anyway, your med mix clearly isn't working completely, so talk about all of this with your prescribing psychiatrist!

I'd rather have a frontal lobotomy than a bottle in front of me.
